2,2-Pentamethylene-1,3-dioxolane (PTD) is a high molecular weight organic compound that reacts with ethylene to form polyethylene glycols. PTD has been shown to be an optimal reaction for the formation of polyethylene glycols with a maximum yield of 98%. The diameter of the product can be controlled by changing the ratio of lanthanum to PTD. In addition, this compound is recyclable, so it can be used as a sustainable alternative to other catalysts such as phosphotungstic acid and chloride. The structure and fluorescence properties of PTD have been studied in detail.
