• Descripción: β-Hexachlorocyclohexane (β-HCH) is an organochlorine insecticide that inhibits mitochondrial membrane potential, causing a decrease in ATP production. β-HCH has been shown to be genotoxic, with a high rate of mutation in bacteria and yeast. It also causes oxidative stress in human serum and increases the levels of reactive oxygen species. β-HCH has long-term toxicity effects by decreasing metabolic rates and altering enzyme activities in experimental models. β-HCH is toxic to both animals and humans at high doses, with a low threshold for acute toxicity. The optimum concentration for this chemical is not known but it should be kept below 1 ppm to avoid any toxic effects.
