It reacts with trifluoroacetic acid, magnesium chloride, and a nucleophile to form 3-bromo-4-fluoroacrylic acid. This reaction takes place at room temperature and does not require a catalyst. The reaction time for this process is about 2 hours. 3-Bromo-4-fluorotoluene can also react with trichloroacetic acid to form 3,4-dibromofluorotoluene which is then reacted with chloride to form 3,3'-dichlorobenzidinium chloride.
