Descripción

Picropodophyllone is a natural product that is isolated from the plant Picrorhiza kurroa. It has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-inflammatory and to treat infections, such as those caused by tuberculosis. Picropodophyllone has been shown to be bioactive in a number of different ways. It inhibits the activity of bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which are enzymes that maintain the integrity of bacterial DNA. Picropodophyllone also inhibits protein synthesis, leading to cell death by inhibiting the production of proteins vital for cell division. The compound also has anti-inflammatory properties due to its inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis.
