5-Hydroxy-7-methoxy-2-methyl-4H-chromen-4-one (5HM) is a natural compound that inhibits the production of reactive oxygen species in the mitochondria by inhibiting the enzyme protein kinase C. This inhibition leads to neuronal death and may be responsible for HIV infection. 5HM also has biological properties that are related to allergic symptoms and infectious diseases. 5HM inhibits the growth of resistant microorganisms such as Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Klebsiella pneumoniae. There are pharmacokinetic properties of 5HM that have been studied in animal models. These studies have shown that it is metabolized in the kidney bean or liver after oral administration and excreted through urine.
