Descripción

Rauwolfia is a genus of plants in the family Apocynaceae. The most important member, Rauwolfia serpentina, contains various alkaloids including isorauhimbin, which is the active constituent of the root extract. Isorauhimbin has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of neurotransmitter release from sympathetic nerve endings and also acts as a venotonic agent. It has been shown to have anticholinesterase activity and raise blood pressure in rats. Isorauhimbin also inhibits the breakdown of noradrenaline and adrenaline by inhibiting acetylcholinesterase and monoamine oxidase (MAO). This drug can also be used to treat hypertension and other cardiovascular disorders, such as angina pectoris or arrhythmia.
