Magnetic resonance spectroscopy has been used to study the reaction products of acetyl iodide with water and other nucleophiles. The reaction mechanism of acetyl iodide involves nucleophilic attack on the carbonyl carbon atom, resulting in formation of an acyl chloride. Acetyl iodide is also commonly used as a dry weight measurement standard in biochemistry assays since it has a constant molecular weight of 74.05 g/mol.
