1-Nitro-2-naphthol is a chemical compound that is classified as a nitrobenzene. It has been shown to cause mutations in the DNA of cells exposed to it, and can be used as an indicator for genotoxic effects. The mechanism of this mutagenicity may be due to the conversion of 1-nitro-2-naphthol to reactive oxygen species such as HNO or ONOO-. This reaction system has been shown to induce transfer reactions with the nucleic acids of cells, resulting in the formation of covalent adducts with their DNA.
