Zymostenol is a drug that inhibits the synthesis of cholesterol and serum bile acids. It is used to diagnose hypercholesterolemia, which is a condition characterized by high levels of cholesterol in the blood. Zymostenol has potent antitumor activity, inhibiting tumor growth and increasing the lifespan of animals with tumors. This drug also affects epidermal growth factor (EGF) production and causes cell death in neuro2a cells. Zymostenol has been shown to increase body mass index in rats, suggesting an association between weight gain and this drug. Hydroxyl groups on zymostenol have been shown to be essential for its anti-tumor effects as well as its ability to inhibit EGF production.
