It is used to control broadleaf weeds, annual grasses, and woody plants. 2-Chloro-4-methylphenoxyacetic acid is considered an endocrine disruptor and may cause reproductive effects. 2-Chloro-4-methylphenoxyacetic acid has been detected in human tissue samples at concentrations up to 100 times higher than the average population. This chemical can be found in food products such as meat, poultry, fish, eggs, and dairy products. The highest concentrations of this chemical are found in oilseed crops such as soybeans and rapeseed. There is evidence that suggests that 2-chloro-4-methylphenoxyacetic acid could cause malformations in fetuses during pregnancy or childhood if exposed to high concentrations during intrauterine development.
