Potassium stearate is a white, crystalline solid that is soluble in organic solvents. It has been shown to have clinical properties and exhibits antimicrobial activity against some bacteria, fungi, and yeast. The mechanism of action is not well understood, but the potassium ion may be involved in disruption of the cell membrane or inhibition of protein synthesis. Potassium stearate can also act as a cationic surfactant due to its hydrophilic nature. This property allows it to interact with anionic surfaces as well as be used in cosmetics and personal care products.
