Descripción

Hydrocortisone is a corticosteroid hormone that is synthesized from the amino acid tyrosine. It is primarily used to treat inflammatory conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis and asthma, and can also be given to patients who have had severe burns. Hydrocortisone has been shown to block the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines in human lymphocytes, which leads to an inhibition of cell death. This drug also has anti-inflammatory properties that are mediated by its ability to inhibit the release of prostaglandins from cells.

Hydrocortisone is often combined with other drugs for the treatment of more complex diseases; for example, it may be used in combination with betamethasone for the treatment of dermatitis or combined with prednisolone for the treatment of asthma.
