It is synthesized by the condensation of crotonylidene and acetyloxyacetic acid. This compound has shown promising anticancer activity with an activation energy of 8.3 kcal/mol for the formation of the reactive species. Acetyloxy(furan-2-yl)methyl acetate has also been shown to be effective against methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus, although it does not have any activity against Gram positive bacteria such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis or Mycobacterium avium complex.
