5-Nonanol is a form of nonanoic acid, an organic compound that belongs to the class of ethyl formates. It is a colorless liquid with a pleasant odor and can be used as a solvent in the preparation of oil solutions. 5-Nonanol reacts rapidly with hydroxyl groups and has been shown to have strong nucleophilic properties. This reactive alcohol also forms stable esters with dibutyl and other alkyl groups. 5-Nonanol is an isomer of octanoic acid, but it has a higher boiling point due to its steric interactions. The use of 5-nonanol in weevil traps has been shown to be effective for the prevention of insect infestations.
