1,3-Benzenedithiol is a molecule that contains a benzene ring with two sulfur atoms. The molecule has many different optical properties and can be used as a fluorescent probe to study electron transfer in polymers. 1,3-Benzenedithiol is also insoluble in water and has been shown to be nontoxic in animals. It has been synthesized by reacting phenylmagnesium bromide with dithiocarbonate and the reaction product purified by distillation. This compound is used as a monolayer enhancer for the growth of semiconductor nanocrystals on gold surfaces.
