Myristic anhydride is a molecule that has been shown to be used for the treatment of autoimmune diseases. This compound binds to the fatty acid acyl chains on surfaces of cells, which prevents the formation of immune complexes and inhibits the production of inflammatory cytokines. The molecular structure of myristic anhydride makes it water-soluble and permeable through cell membranes. Myristic anhydride also has a high degree of hemolytic activity, which could cause damage to red blood cells in vivo. This chemical is resistant to many microorganisms and can be used as a preservative in food products. Myristic anhydride is also used in polycarboxylic acids and in the synthesis of ethanolamine.
