Ethyl abietate has been shown to have potential as a biomarker for chronic kidney disease due to its increased levels of sodium carbonate and cationic surfactant reaction products in the blood. The use of ethyl abietate as a control agent for anhydrous sodium has been patented. This product also reacts with polymer film to form hydrogenated ethyl abietate, which has viscosity properties similar to those of fatty acid esters.
