Tetramethyl pyromellitate is a compound that consists of a hydroxyl group, two hydrogen atoms, and an amino group. It has a primary amine and is diametrically symmetric. Tetramethyl pyromellitate has a low melting point and a high thermal expansion coefficient. It reacts with hydrogen fluoride in the presence of an organic base to form tetra-fluoromethylated methyl ester derivatives. The reaction vessel can be either glass or metal, and the cationic surfactant must be added to the reaction mixture to prevent aggregation of the product. The fatty acid chloride can also be used as a reactant because it will yield the same product with less difficulty than using hydrogen fluoride. The molecule is polybasic, meaning that it contains more than one basic atom, such as nitrogen or oxygen. Tetramethyl pyromellitate is also soluble in water because it has hydroxyl groups on its structure.
