m-Toluidine hydrochloride is a surfactant that can be used in the production of detergents and other cleaners. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria by preventing their ability to form cell walls and membranes. The effects of m-toluidine hydrochloride on bacterial cells have been observed through a kinetic assay, which measures the rate of bacterial growth. The effect is mediated by the presence of counterions, such as sodium dodecylsulfate or methyl alcohol, which are necessary for the binding of m-toluidine hydrochloride to the membrane surface. This binding leads to changes in membrane permeability, resulting in inhibition of protein synthesis and cell division.
