trans-3,3,5-Trimethylcyclohexanol is a cyclic alcohol and a hydrogen donor. It is used as a catalyst in the preparation of cyclohexanol and other organic compounds. The reaction is catalyzed by palladium metal on sulfate or acidic supports. Hydrogen sulfate is formed during the reaction and can be removed by adding sodium hypochlorite or dioxane to the solution. This process yields trans-3,3,5-trimethylcyclohexanol and hydrogen sulfide. The trans configuration of the product molecule results from an intramolecular hydrogen shift that occurs between two methyl groups.
