2,4-Dibromo-3-pentanone is a synthetic tropone that has phytotoxic properties. It is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of other bioactive molecules. 2,4-Dibromo-3-pentanone is a diastereomer of 2,4-dibromo-3-pentanol and 2,4-dibromohexanol. Hydrogen peroxide can be synthesized from 2,4-dibromo-3-pentanone using ozonides as synthons. The x-ray crystal structures of the molecule have been determined; it is made up of a pyrrole ring with two carbonyl groups attached to it. The molecule can be synthesized from ipomoea and lachrymator. Ionomycin can also be synthesized from this molecule by adding an acetyl group to the pyrrole ring.
