It is used for the treatment of male infertility by inhibiting the synthesis of spermatozoa and as an analytical reagent in protein data. Isopropyl methanesulfonate has been shown to be genotoxic, with a high resistance to hydrolysis by hydrolases. It also has been shown to have linear calibration curves and a reaction mechanism that involves the formation of methanesulfonic acid from methanesulfonic acid chloride and sodium hydroxide. The drug is metabolized into isopropyl sulfate, which can be detected in vivo after administration.
