9-Aminophenanthrene is a fluorescent probe that has been shown to bind with high affinity to the cell nuclei of human serum. When bound, it has been shown to be homotropic and cooperatively fluorescent in the presence of a second amine. The kinetics of 9-aminophenanthrene binding to DNA have been studied using titration calorimetry, which showed that the binding process was reversible and had an activation energy of about 41 kcal/mol. 9-Aminophenanthrene can also be used as a fluorescent probe for studying protein synthesis and recombinant virus replication because it binds to fatty acids and fluoresces in the presence of rat liver microsomes.
