4-Anilinophenylmethanol (APM) is a monolayer molecule that has been shown to be sensitive to butyric acid and other molecules with similar chemical structures. The sensitivity of the molecule is due to its ability to self-assemble into a monolayer on the surface of materials such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET). When exposed to light, APM undergoes a shift in optical absorption from blue to red. This property can be used in photoconductive devices, such as silicon solar cells. APM also interacts with alkoxides, which may lead to new applications for this molecule.
