It has been shown to be a strong inhibitor of protein synthesis in human liver and urine samples. 1,2-Diphenylethylamine is also a substrate for cholesterol ester transferase and can serve as a replacement for diphtheria toxin in some studies. The compound has been used as a probe in magnetic resonance spectroscopy to study the binding of methanol solvent and ruthenium complex to the amino group at position 2.
