3-Methylhexyl Acetate (3MA) is a chemical compound that can be found in soybean products. 3MA is an organic ester that is classified as a fatty acid and has been shown to have a number of effects on the human body. 3MA has been shown to cause symptoms such as headaches, nausea, vomiting, and skin irritation when ingested orally. It also has effects on carbohydrate composition in the body, but these are not fully understood at this time. Diagnosis of 3MA toxicity can be done by testing for oxadiazole or homologues in the blood or tissues, although it is not currently known which test is more accurate. The protein synthesis process may be affected by 3MA and this can lead to dna repair mechanisms being inhibited. There are also indications that the ubiquitin-proteasome system may be disrupted by 3MA exposure.
