Roxithromycin is an antibiotic that belongs to the azalide class of macrolides. It is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections in humans and animals, including respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, gastrointestinal tract infections, and sexually transmitted diseases. N-Demethyl roxithromycin is a metabolite of roxithromycin that has been shown to be more active than the parent compound due to its lack of affinity for cytochrome P450 enzymes. This makes it suitable for use with other drugs that are metabolized by this enzyme system.
N-Demethyl roxithromycin has been shown to have excellent bioavailability in colostrum and high pharmacopoeia purity, which makes it suitable for use as a reference standard for antibiotics.
