25-Desacetyl rifapentin is a prodrug of rifapentine, which is an antituberculosis drug. It is used for the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and tuberculosis. 25-Desacetyl rifapentin has been shown to be effective in inhibiting HIV replication in vitro, but it has not been studied in vivo. It has also been shown that 25-desacetyl rifapentin has a higher affinity for human erythrocytes than other animal cells. The pharmacokinetics of desacetyl rifapentin have been evaluated after single oral doses in humans, with a mean terminal half-life of 5.3 hours.
