13-Cis-fenretinide is a retinoid that has been shown to be effective in treating hyperostosis. 13-Cis-fenretinide has also been used to treat t-cell lymphomas and metabolic disorders by inducing apoptosis and inhibiting the proliferation of tumor cells. 13-Cis-fenretinide is administered orally, topically, or via injection. It can also be administered intravenously for the treatment of acute promyelocytic leukemia. The drug is metabolized extracellularly via hydrolysis to all-trans-retinoic acid (ATRA), an active form with a shorter half life than 13-cis-fenretinide. This form binds to retinoic acid receptors and induces cytokine production by T cells, which may lead to remission of the disease.
