It has been shown to increase cardiac contractility in rats, and also to produce an antiarrhythmic effect. The compound is unsymmetrical, and its biological properties have been studied using both control studies and activation energies. Cis-Ethyl 4-hydroxycyclohexanecarboxylate has been investigated in clinical development as a potential treatment for depression or anxiety, but it was not approved because of its pharmacokinetic properties. Cis-Ethyl 4-hydroxycyclohexanecarboxylate binds with high affinity to the 5-HT1A receptor subtype in the brain, which may provide relief from conditions such as depression or anxiety.
