The molecule contains a benzene ring with two nitro groups attached at positions 2 and 3. It is an isomer of 3-nitrobenzothiazole, which has a thiophene ring instead of benzene. Benzothiophene can be synthesized by a nucleophilic substitution reaction between 2-bromobenzaldehyde and nitrous acid. 2-Bromo-3-nitrobenzotrifluoride can also be produced by reacting bromine with nitrous acid in the presence of benzoic acid or benzenesulfonic acid as catalysts.
