Mepeg aldehyde is a receptor-binding molecule that belongs to the group of amines. It has been shown to bind to the beta-adrenergic receptor in chimpanzee platelets and cause thrombocytopenia. This compound has also been shown to inhibit HIV infection and growth factor activity in humans. Mepeg aldehyde inhibits mitosis, but does not affect protein synthesis or cell viability, which is due to its ability to bind lysine residues on the proteins that are involved in mitosis. This property makes mepeg aldehyde an attractive candidate for pegylation, which is used as an anticancer agent.
