Strictosidine is a monoterpenoid indole alkaloid that is found in the plant genus Palicourea. It has been shown to inhibit enzyme activities in the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, which are responsible for the production of fatty acids, as well as tissue culture cells. Strictosidine has been shown to have anti-cancer activity and may be used for the treatment of insulin resistance. This compound belongs to a group of iridoid glucosides that are found in plants from the family Apocynaceae. The chemical structure of strictosidine is similar to other iridoid glucosides, such as vincamine and periwinkle alkaloids.
