It has been shown to have photocatalytic activity and can be used as a ligand for encapsulation. This compound has been synthesized in the form of different polymorphs and crystallizes from an oil in the orthorhombic system with space group Pbcn and lattice constants a = 4.9 nm, b = 5.7 nm, c = 6.2 nm. 3,4-Dimethylthieno[2,3-b]thiophene-2,5-dicarboxylic acid is nonporous and has high absorption capacity for metal ions such as Fe(III) or Cu(II).
