Lysostaphin is a glycan with a terminal half-life of 2 hours. It is produced by Staphylococcus staphylolyticus and has been shown to have cell lysis activity. Lysostaphin binds to the penicillin-binding proteins in the bacterial cell wall, thereby inhibiting synthesis of the peptidoglycan layer and cell division. This drug also has high resistance to methicillin, tetracycline, and other antibiotics. The genome sequence of Lysostaphin shows that it contains signal peptide sequences at its N terminus and lysine residues at its C terminus. These features are important for its function as a protease enzyme that cleaves glycan chains from the cell wall of bacteria.
