Clenbuterol is a beta-2 adrenergic receptor agonist that is used in the treatment of asthma and bronchitis. It has been shown to be effective against clenbuterol-resistant strains of the bacteria Streptococcus pneumoniae. Clenbuterol also inhibits the growth of cavity-causing bacteria, such as Streptococcus mutans and Prevotella nigrescens. Clenbuterol has been shown to inhibit the growth of oral cavity bacteria by binding to DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, leading to cell death by inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division.
