It is an antagonist for the amino acid glutamate, which may be involved in the development of seizures and neurodegeneration. The compound has two enantiomers, which are called S(+) and R(−). The S(+) form has been shown to be more potent than the R(−) form. 1-Amino-5-phenylpentan-3-ol binds to the glutamate receptor on neurons, blocking the binding of glutamate and inhibiting its excitatory effects. This drug also has a diastereomeric effect, with one stereoisomer having a right hand twist and the other left hand twist.
