R 112 is a recombinant virus that has been genetically modified to express a viral protein, such as the envelope glycoprotein gp120. R 112 is used in the treatment of prostate cancer and herpes simplex virus infections. It has also shown activity against wild-type HIV strains in cell cultures. This recombinant virus binds to response elements on the surface of cells and delivers its gene payload, which may be a peptide or a protein, into the cell. This can stimulate an antibody response and lead to tumor regression. The recombinant virus also binds to kinesin motors and can be transported along microtubules towards the nucleus of cells, where it can replicate inside host nuclei without being detected by anti-viral proteins. These properties make R 112 an effective therapeutic agent for radical prostatectomy and other diseases caused by viruses that are resistant to existing treatments.
