Cholesterol-5±,6±-epoxide is an epoxide that has been shown to have a physiological function in the body. It is produced through the metabolism of cholesterol and other sterol compounds. Cholesterol-5±,6±-epoxide binds to enzymes such as steroidal alkaloids and nitrogen atoms and inhibits their activities. The bacterial strain Pseudomonas aeruginosa produces this metabolite when treated with a nitrogen source. This metabolite also inhibits enzyme activities in bacteria such as epoxidases, which are involved in the synthesis of fatty acids and other important cellular functions. Cholesterol-5±,6±-epoxide has been shown to bind to CB2 receptors in the body and may be used for skin cancer treatment because it causes apoptosis of cancer cells.
