The hydroxide ion interacts with the hydrogen bonding interactions of the water molecule to form hydrogen bonds. This increases the boiling point of water, which makes it more difficult to remove from a solution. In addition, this chemical has been shown to be effective against malignant brain tumors and may react with glycol ethers to produce zirconium oxide and hydrogen fluoride.
