L-Histidine methyl ester is a water-soluble analog of L-histidine. It has been shown to have physiological effects on neurons, including the induction of neuronal growth and increased axonal growth. L-Histidine methyl ester also has metal chelate properties, which may be due to its ability to bind with metals such as copper, zinc, or iron. One study showed that L-Histidine methyl ester was effective in reducing disease activity in a mouse model of rheumatoid arthritis. In addition, L-Histidine methyl ester has been shown to act as a response element for the gene encoding nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), suggesting that it may have an effect on inflammatory conditions.
