Chloropentamethyldisilane reacts with the metal oxide to form a high resistance coating that prevents corrosion. The transfer mechanism for this reaction is chloride, which forms a bond with the silicon atom and cleaves the magnesium oxide bond, resulting in a chloride ion and magnesium chloride.
