Descripción:Tetrabromo-p-xylene (TBPX) is a member of the class of compounds known as esters. It is an acetal that can be prepared by reacting formaldehyde with bromine in the presence of acetic acid. TBPX is most commonly used as a catalyst for the conversion of primary amines into secondary amines, and it has been shown to have catalytic activity with acid methyl esters as well. The acetal group in TBPX reacts with a variety of functional groups such as alcohols, phenols, carboxylic acids, and sulfonic acids, which makes this compound useful for synthesizing other chemical compounds.
