In the presence of peroxide, N-(2,4-Dinitrophenyl)-L-serine undergoes a series of reactions that result in the formation of an unstable molecule. This molecule is then analyzed by amino acid analysis to determine its identity. The molecule has been shown to be a ligand and interacts with murein and teichoic acid. Structural studies have been performed to show the hydroxymethyl group and functional groups in this molecule. The low detection limit for this compound makes it ideal for use as a tracer in airflow experiments.
