The compound is prepared by reacting ethylene with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of an alkali metal catalyst. 2-Cyanoethyl ether has been shown to be effective in removing cyanides, acrylonitrile, and other organic compounds from wastewater. The activation energy for this reaction is 22.3 kJ/mol. This chemical can also exist as four isomers: cis-, trans-, syn-, and anti-.
