It is dehydrated in the environment, and positions itself in such a way as to inhibit viral DNA polymerase from binding to the template strand. Synthetic 2-(2-Formylphenyl)acetic acid has shown pharmacokinetic profile in plasma samples, which may be due to its interaction with γ-secretase inhibitors. This compound has also been shown to have antitumor activity against anthracyclines, and it can be synthesized from sustainable sources of phenylacetic acid. 2-(2-Formylphenyl)acetic acid can be converted into benzoic acid by nucleophilic attack of an amide group.
