4-Nitrothiophenol is a chemical compound that is used in analytical chemistry as an indicator of the pH. 4-Nitrothiophenol is stable in alkaline solution and will change color depending on the pH level. The color change can be detected by eye or with a spectrophotometer. 4-Nitrothiophenol is also used to detect the presence of nitrite ions in solution, which can be used to identify the presence of nitrite-dependent bacteria such as Clostridium botulinum, Staphylococcus aureus, and Salmonella enterica.
