4-DAMP is a potent inhibitor of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) and cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) signaling pathways. It has been shown to decrease locomotor activity in rats, and it blocks the activation of the fructus-induced signal pathway. 4-DAMP also inhibits the polymerase chain reaction, which is important for biological studies. The drug binds to the cytosolic calcium ion channel and reduces mitochondrial membrane potential. This causes a decrease in growth factor-β1 levels in cells, which leads to cell death by apoptosis. 4-DAMP inhibits cholinergic neurotransmission, but with low potency compared to other pharmacological agents.
