Isotaxiresinol is a trifluoroacetic acid derivative that has been used as an experimental model for the study of physiological activities. It has been shown to have hypoglycemic effects in rats and to reduce the production of TNF-α, which is an inflammatory cytokine. Isotaxiresinol has also been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects in animals with inflammatory bowel disease and to inhibit the growth of bacteria in cell cultures. This compound can be found structurally in secoisolariciresinol, but it differs from this substance by having a hydroxyl group at C-3. Isotaxiresinol is a fatty acid that can be made by plants during photosynthesis.
