(S)-3-Amino-4-phenylbutanoic acid is a β-amino acid that is a component of the human genetic material. It has been shown to be a component of viral and bacterial DNA, which may be involved in the development of drug resistance. (S)-3-Amino-4-phenylbutanoic acid is also an inhibitor of dihydropyrimidinase, an enzyme that catalyses the conversion of 3-mercaptopropionic acid to 3-aminoacrylic acid. (S)-3-Amino-4-phenylbutanoic acid has been shown to have pharmacological effects on humans, such as increasing blood pressure and heart rate. This compound also inhibits lectins by binding to their carbohydrate moieties. Lectins are found in plants and animals and have many different functions, such as cell adhesion, defense against pathogens, and regulation of blood glucose levels.
